Two Britannica entries, one throughline
The article below traces rock’s own branching from the 1950s onward. This page steps back one generation further, to where Britannica’s own entries suggest rock came from. Blues, per Britannica, is “a genre of folk music created by African Americans before the turn of the 20th century, originally in the South.” Rock, per Simon Frith’s separate entry, “emerged in the 1950s” in the United States. That is a real, dated throughline across two independently-written reference-work entries — decades of a documented tradition, then a new genre emerging from the same country, within the same half-century.
Reading a history page for what changed, not just when
Frith’s entry follows rock all the way to its own century’s end, by which point it had become “the world’s dominant form of popular music.” Robert Walser’s separate entry on heavy metal — one of the later branches the article below covers — independently calls it “one of the most commercially successful genres of rock music.” Read together rather than separately, that is three data points on one chain: a documented pre-1900 tradition, a 1950s emergence from it, and a later branch still being described in superlatives by century’s end. History, on this evidence, is less a sequence of unrelated eras than one lineage restated by different specialists.
Ninety-some years, three sources, one shape: blues documented before 1900; rock’s origin dated to the 1950s; heavy metal — a branch of that same rock lineage — independently called one of rock’s most commercially successful genres by the same period Frith calls rock dominant. Three separately-written Britannica entries, agreeing on the shape of one continuous story.
